Scottish Silver Verge Fusee Pocket Watch, Coltness

Scottish Silver Verge Fusee Pocket Watch, Coltness

DescriptionA rare, George III, Silver Pair Cased Verge Pocket Watch made by Alexander Rhind of Coltness in Scotland and dating from c1791. Coltness is the largest suburb of the town of Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Scotland to the east of Glasgow. Scottish verge watches are relatively rare, therefore this is a nice collector's item. The outer silver case is in good condition, but does have an indent to the edge. The inner case in good condition. The case is hallmarked sterling silver, made in London and with the date letter q for 1791/92. The inner case with old Scottish watchmaker's papers. The movement is signed by the maker Alex Rhind, Coltness and has the serial number 580. It is in good condition, and working, been running on test for twelve hours overnight. Very nice that this watch also still has the original dust cover, again signed by the maker and with the serial number 580. Like all watches, a service would be recommended. In my experience these old verge watches can be temperamental and may sometimes stop, also they are not known for accuracy by modern day standards. These watches are for collectors and not something you would expect to use, as it is a delicate scientific instrument that is over 230 years old ! The dial is in good condition for the age, but does have a chip to the centre and has some hairlines and chips near the edges as can be seen. Overall a nice example of an old verge fuse pocket watch.
