Silver Napkin Ring, Coldstream Guards Provenance

Silver Napkin Ring, Coldstream Guards Provenance

DescriptionENGLISH SILVER NAPKIN RING, COLDSTREAM GUARDS, SIR A F SMITH, Lt. GENERAL, A very good, English sterling silver Napkin Ring made in Birmingham and dating from c1920/21, complete with presentation case/box. It is hallmarked with the maker's mark "JBC&SLd" for J B Chatterley & Sons Ltd, the Lion Passant Sterling Silver mark, the anchor Birmingham town mark and date letter "V" for 1920/21. The plain silver napkin ring has a rectangular panel to both front and rear that has engine turned engraving. The front engraved with the Regimental Star of the Coldstream Guards. The oval shaped napkin ring measures approximately 55mm in width and 32mm in height. The weight is 40.9g. The napkin ring is in excellent condition and shows very little signs of any use, although the bottom edge at one end is slightly pushed in. The silver napkin ring has an interesting provenance: It was originally owned by Lieutenant General Sir Arthur Francis Smith, KCB, KBE, DSO, MC (9 Dec 1890 – 8 Aug 1977) who served in the Coldstream Guards. It was later passed down to his son, Geoffrey Arthur Granville Smith (1926-1953), who was a Captain in the Coldstream Guards. Geoffrey Arthur Granville Smith died on 18 September 1953 at age 27, following an accident. Following his death the napkin ring was gifted to his cousin Mary. Inside the box is a rather poignant letter written by Geoffrey's mother to Mary, passing on the napkin ring as a memento. The letter with their home address Pirbright lodge, Woking, Surrey and dated 18th March 1954. A lovely historical item, in excellent condition, a nice addition to any collection.
