DescriptionA very nice, Antique, Victorian English Silver Presentation Trowel made by Edward & John Barnard in London and dating from c1855. The trowel is hallmarked with the maker's mark "EB&JB" for Edward & John Barnard, the Lion Passant sterling silver mark, the Monarch's Head duty mark (Queen Victoria), the Leopard's Head London town mark and date letter "U" for 1855/56. The trowel with the presentation inscription "With this trowel, the first stone of "The Sussex Wing" of the Royal Free Hospital, to be erected in memory of His late Royal Highness, the Duke of Sussex, was laid by Alexander Dobie Esq., Provincial Grand Master for Surrey and Grand Registrar of the Fraternity of Free & Accepted Masons of England, acting for the Right Hon. the Earl of Zetland, The Most Worshipful Grand Master on the 30th day of July 1855" The underside of the trowel also engraved with the inscription "Presented to Alexander Dobie Esq., by The Committee of Management of The Royal Free Hospital" The trowel measures 12" inches (310mm) in length. In very good condition although the handle has some hairlines and some movement at the join to the silver section.
