Victorian English Silver Fusee Pocket Watch c1881
A nice Antique Silver Pocket Watch, English made and retailed by J G Graves of Sheffield, in good condition and in working order. John George Graves (1866–1945), known as George, was a successful English watchmaker, entrepreneur and public benefactor. He became Sheffield's Lord Mayor and an Alderman in 1926 and he was given Freedom of the City in 1929. He was born in Lincolnshire in 1866 and died in 1945, after having settled in Sheffield. Graves moved to Sheffield, aged 14, to become an apprentice watchmaker going alone when reaching the age of twenty. He set up one of Britain's first mail order businesses, selling first watches, He expanded his business to encompass a wide range of goods and the company was absorbed by Great Universal Stores after Graves' death. The English made sterling silver case is in good condition. It is hallmarked with the case maker's mark "TPH" for The Lancashire Watch Co Ltd (Thomas Peter Hewitt), the Lion Passant sterling silver mark, the Chester town mark and date letter "P" for 1899/1900. This must be one of the later English made watches retailed by J G Graves as I have sold other examples and the more recent ones have a Swiss made movement as Graves started using the imported movements because they were more competitively priced. The dial is in very good condition. It has Roman numerals and a sub seconds dial at six o'clock. It is signed by the retailer "J G Graves Sheffield" below "The Express English Lever". The glass is a later, plastic replacement. The watch measures approximately 51mm in diameter (excuding stem and bow ring).
